A working definition of GEO

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the systematic work of improving how public information is discovered, accurately understood, verified and cited in AI search and generative answers.

This definition contains four distinct states: whether a page can be crawled, whether the brand entity can be identified, whether claims can be verified through other sources and whether an answer actually cites a source. These states are not interchangeable.

Boundary

GEO can improve eligibility and signals, but no provider can guarantee inclusion, ranking, recommendation or citation by a third-party AI platform.

How does GEO relate to SEO?

GEO and SEO share foundations such as crawling, indexing, internal links, page quality and authority. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional technical requirements or special AI markup; a page must first be eligible for regular Search.

SEO

Primarily observes search impressions, rankings, clicks and organic traffic.

GEO

Additionally observes brand description accuracy, cited pages, answer sources and AI referrals.

A four-layer GEO framework

  1. Discoverable and accessible

Check robots.txt, CDN and firewall behavior, status codes, sitemaps, internal links and whether key text exists in readable HTML.

  2. Entity clarity

Align brand name, category, services, regions, contact details and bilingual descriptions, with structured data matching visible text.

  3. Verifiable information

Publish authors, dates, cases, methods and original sources, while keeping the same brand identity across credible external profiles.

  4. Citable content

Answer real questions with direct definitions, steps, data, limitations and sources instead of mass-producing generic marketing articles.

How should GEO be measured?

Do not replace real outcomes with one opaque “GEO score.” Track four groups of evidence separately.

LayerEvidence
TechnicalCrawler status codes, index coverage, canonical and hreflang validation
EntityBrand name, category and service accuracy under fixed queries
CitationPlatform, query, date, region, cited URL and screenshot

Bing recommends IndexNow, XML sitemaps, crawlable internal links and relevant external links to help Bing and Copilot discover content, while noting that these signals do not guarantee visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Does adding llms.txt get a site included in AI answers?

No. It can serve as a machine-friendly content directory, but it does not replace crawlable pages, search indexation, entity consistency or trusted sources. Google also says its AI search does not require special AI text files.

How long does GEO take?

Technical changes can be validated immediately, but crawl, index and answer changes are controlled by each platform. They may take days or weeks, or may not occur.

Can GEO guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?

No. A defensible service improves accessibility, accuracy and verifiability, then tracks real citations instead of selling an outcome it cannot control.
